\nDavid O'Neill's remarks\, The Power of Nature in our Fight Against Clima
te Change\, will explore how local land trusts\, homeowners\, and others c
an take actions and band together to advocate for nature in solving the gl
obe’s greatest threat.\n\nNature plays a critical role in our fight to a
ddress climate change. The Massachusetts Global Warming Solutions Act reco
gnizes that Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) are required to achieve our go
al of Net Zero Emissions by 2050. NCS are actions to protect\, manage\, an
d restore natural and working lands to remove and reduce carbon emissions.
In Massachusetts\, NCS can reduce and remove an additional 1-2 million me
tric tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year\, the equivalent of takin
g roughly 215\,000 to 435\,000 cars off the road. These solutions also enh
ance the safety and reduce costs of communities from natural hazards\, suc
h as flooding\, heat\, and drought. And the work to protect nature and to
apply nature-based solutions contributes significantly to our economy. The
Division of Ecological Restoration (DER) has found that for every $1 mill
ion spent on nature-based solutions\, 12.5 full time jobs are created or m
aintained.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nDavid O'Neill  has dedicated his professional ca
reer to conservation. As president of Mass Audubon\, he is leading the 125
-year-old organization to tackle the most pressing challenges of our time:
loss of biodiversity\, inequitable access to nature\, and the threat of c
limate change.\n\nBefore joining Mass Audubon in 2020\, he served as the C
hief Conservation Officer and Senior Advisor to the CEO of National Audubo
n Society (NAS). While there\, his powerful vision\, collaborative nature\
, and ability to raise critical funds elevated the entire organization. He
led the development of NAS's conservation strategies\; helped to unify th
 e organization around a single vision\; oversaw the organization's policy\
, conservation\, and science agendas\; and launched innovative programs to
help fight the impacts of climate change.\n\nRoles prior to his work at N
ational Audubon include Vice President for Conservation at the National Fi
sh and Wildlife Foundation\, Vice President at Cherokee Investment Partner
s\, a private equity firm dedicated to sustainable investing\, Executive D
irector of the Chesapeake Bay Trust\, and Director of Land Use Policy and
Outreach for the Urban Land Institute.\n\nDavid\, who grew up in Maryland
on a Chesapeake Bay farm\, is the recipient of the Andrew White Medal from
Loyola University for his leadership on Chesapeake Bay recovery efforts.
He has written authoritatively and spoken often about the relationship bet
ween land use and environmental health and spoke on these issues nationall
 y and internationally.
