SUMMARY:LLCT's 2022 Annual Meeting: Why do Fireflies Flash?
DESCRIPTION:Join Lincoln Land Conservation Trust for our Annual Meeting! Al
l are welcome to celebrate another year of conservation in Lincoln. \n\nT
he evening will start promptly at 7:00 P.M. with a short business meeting.
LLCT members in attendance are invited to vote in the new slate of Truste
es. Immediately following the business meeting\, Avalon Owens\, our keynot
e speaker\, will give her remarks.\nThis will be a virtual meeting. Regist
ration is required to receive the Zoom Meeting link.  Please register her
 e. \nIf you have any difficulty registering\, please email llct@lincolncon
servation.org and we would be happy to register you manually. Once registe
red you will receive a confirmation email with the Zoom Meeting link. If y
ou don't receive that email\, let us know so we can help!\n\nWhy do firefl
ies flash? How to be a firefly steward\, neighbor\, and friend\, and keep
their lights turned on\n\nBecause they want to be seen! But their unique b
ioluminescent signals can be obscured by street lamps\, house lights\, and
other sources of nighttime light pollution — and if we’re not careful
\, our lights might extinguish theirs forever. Dr. Avalon C.S. Owens will
share her recent research on this understudied aspect of firefly conservat
ion\, much of which has taken place at sites around Lincoln\, and suggest
some simple solutions that can help us coexist with fireflies\, moths\, an
d our other nocturnal neighbors on an increasingly urbanized planet.\n\nAv
alon C.S. Owens received her Ph.D. from the Department of Biology at Tufts
University in spring 2022\, where she studied the impact of light polluti
on on North American fireflies. She earned her Masters degree in Entomolog
y from National Taiwan University\, and hosts a bilingual educational YouT
ube channel called INSECT[昆蟲島]ISLAND. This fall she will be running
a light pollution research group at the Rowland Institute of Science at Ha
 rvard University.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;\n
