SUMMARY:On Belonging in Outdoor Spaces: Decolonizing Contributions by Indig
enous People with Claudia Fox Tree
DESCRIPTION:The On Belonging in Outdoor Spaces is a free speaker series fea
turing speakers whose work is advancing efforts to strengthen belonging an
d connection between communities of color and the outdoors. \nHow do we d
ecolonize what we have learned about Native American achievements? We add
important missing information and change the dominant narrative. This pres
entation will help connect the dots from understanding the land to underst
anding Indigenous People. We will move from the past to the present in lea
rning how Indigenous ingenuity impacted language\, history\, industrializa
tion\, and cultures around the world.\nClaudia Fox Tree is a professional
educator and social justice activist who facilitates courses and workshops
on having challenging conversations about diversity\, equity\, and social
justice. In decolonizing equity conversations\, she centers Indigenous cu
lture\, resistance\, and contributions\, while dismantling stereotypes and
historical inaccuracies in what is now known as North and South America.
She asks allies and co-conspirators to come on the journey with her. Claud
ia A. Fox Tree (she\, her) has been a middle school special education teac
her for over 35 years. She earned her Master’s Degree in Education from
Northeastern University and is currently a doctoral student at Lesley Univ
ersity. Since 2000\, Claudia has been a board member on the Massachusetts
Center for Native American Awareness. Since 1998\, she has been a Massachu
setts liaison for the United Confederation of Taino People.\nThe host orga
nizations for this speaker series are Farrington Nature Linc\, deCordova S
