Recording of August 11, 2020 Monarch Program

LLCT held a fantastic program all about Monarch Butterflies on August 11th via Zoom. Although our original speaker, Kristin Steinmetz, had a last minute cancellation, she was able to line up a wonderful alternative speaker, Dr. Martha Gach. Martha is the Education Manager at Mass Audubon’s Broad Meadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary and Conservation Center. She designed and planted the Broad Meadow Brook butterfly gardens, and organizes the sanctuary’s annual butterfly festival. She holds a PhD in evolutionary biology and is the president of the Massachusetts Butterfly Club. Martha is also an adjunct professor at Worcester State University and teaches courses on climate change and other environmental topics.

After the program, Martha also shared a few resources from the Massachusetts Butterfly Club (MBC) for those interested in citizen science efforts. The MassLep Listerve is a great resource for receiving information about butterflies and for reporting sightings. The forum also serves as a platform for asking questions. Additionally, the MBC has a Monarch Guardians Program if you raise caterpillars and release Monarchs back into the wild. Contact MBC for more information about that program.
