Why do fireflies flash? How to be a firefly steward, neighbor, and friend, and keep their lights turned on

Because they want to be seen! But their unique bioluminescent signals can be obscured by street lamps, house lights, and other sources of nighttime light pollution — and if we’re not careful, our lights might extinguish theirs forever. Dr. Avalon C.S. Owens will share her recent research on this understudied aspect of firefly conservation, much of which has taken place at sites around Lincoln, and suggest some simple solutions that can help us coexist with fireflies, moths, and our other nocturnal neighbors on an increasingly urbanized planet.

Avalon C.S. Owens received her Ph.D. from the Department of Biology at Tufts University in spring 2022, where she studied the impact of light pollution on North American fireflies. She earned her Masters degree in Entomology from National Taiwan University, and hosts a bilingual educational YouTube channel called INSECT[昆蟲島]ISLAND. This fall she will be running a light pollution research group at the Rowland Institute of Science at Harvard University.
